If you are thinking about cosmetic surgery there are several things you should consider. The first of these is to ask yourself why you are considering having cosmetic surgery in the first place.

 

 

Many people are just looking for a way to improve some aspect of their appearance rather than a total makeover, for example improving their nose profile or their waistline or to smooth out some of the age effects of wrinkles that have crept into the picture. Many people report a significant increase in self confidence with cosmetic surgery that gives them the impetus to open up a bit more socially or to try some activities they might not have done in the past.

 

What cosmetic surgery will not do is improve a bad job situation or make a failing personal relationship better. The issues in those instances are much deeper than just appearance. But if you go ahead and have your nose fixed or if you opt for liposuction after trying diets and working out at the gym without satisfactory results, you should have realistic expectations about what your surgery results will be. The best way to assure this kind of success is to choose an experienced surgeon in the first place who will speak freely with you up-front, answer all your questions and make you feel comfortable before, during and after your cosmetic surgery.

 

It is best if you find a surgeon who has attained certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, if you are living in the U.S. In any case your surgeon should be certified by an organization that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialists, an organization that oversees sub-specialty boards. This organization has strict requirements for education and examination criteria. If your surgeon does not have these qualifications you would do well to look further for another doctor who does.

 

The best candidates for cosmetic surgery are in generally good health to begin with, have reasonable expectations before the operation, understand the risks involved in any surgical procedure, and who have good confidence in their surgeon.
